One of life's regrets - not being alive in the 80's. (Gosh Mum and Dad, couldn't you have done everything a decade or so earlier?) The 80’s looked fabulous. Big hair, bold make up, bad music videos.
Sing Street embodies all of these things in a sweet, feel-good coming of age film, with an awesome original soundtrack. Basically, boy meets girl. Boy lies about being in a band to impress girl. Boy then goes about creating a band with misfit friends.
When I was in high school, a boy wrote a song about me. Then one day, guitar in hand, serenaded me. And what a masterpiece it was, “Oh Ceri, used to sit beside me all the time, in physics…” (Yup, I took physics. Don’t look so surprised). He then went on to lament how I "told him stories of other men" and he cried inside… I’m obviously just a heart breaker since way back haha. Don’t think I quite inspired him to create a band but hey, I’ll still claim being the muse behind a song.
Anyway, back to Sing Street. Full of idealism, optimism and the aspirations of youth, you can’t help but end the film with a smile and the determination to get out there and achieve your dreams. I also now wish I was talented enough to write my own songs and start a band. Maybe I should track down that boy from school for some help….
